Our directory features therapists who specialise in tantric bodywork, somatic experiencing, breathwork, trauma-informed touch therapy, sex therapy, and energy healing. What Makes Trauma-Aware Therapy Different?

5 February 2026 · by Tatiana Aitken · Trauma, Somatic Therapy
Bare feet grounded on floor

In recent years, the term "trauma-aware" has become increasingly common in therapeutic settings. But what does it actually mean for a therapist to be trauma-aware, and why should it matter to you as a client seeking body-oriented therapy? The distinction is far more significant than you might think, and understanding it can help you make safer, more informed choices about your healing journey.

The body-oriented therapy field encompasses a wide spectrum of practices, from gentle somatic experiencing to more intensive bodywork. Within this landscape, trauma-aware practitioners represent a specific commitment to understanding how past experiences live in the body and how therapeutic touch can either support healing or inadvertently cause harm.

Trauma lives in the body, not just the mind

Pioneering researchers and clinicians have demonstrated that traumatic experiences are stored not just as memories in the brain, but as patterns of tension, numbness, and dysregulation throughout the entire body. When we experience something overwhelming, our nervous system may become stuck in states of hyperarousal (fight or flight) or hypoarousal (freeze or collapse). These patterns can persist for years or even decades, manifesting as chronic pain, difficulty with intimacy, anxiety, and a pervasive sense of disconnection from one's own body.

This understanding is central to trauma-aware body therapy. Rather than simply working on muscles and tissues, a trauma-aware practitioner recognises that the body they are touching holds a complete history. Every area of tension, every involuntary flinch, every region of numbness may be communicating something important about that person's lived experience.

What does trauma-aware actually mean?

A trauma-aware therapist operates from several key principles that distinguish their practice. First, they prioritise informed consent at every stage of the session, checking in frequently and ensuring you feel genuinely empowered to say no or adjust the pace. Second, they understand the window of tolerance, that optimal zone where a person can process difficult material without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down. Third, they have training in recognising trauma responses as they arise during sessions, including dissociation, emotional flooding, and freeze states, and they know how to respond safely when these occur.

This contrasts with practitioners who may be technically skilled in bodywork but lack the understanding of how their touch intersects with a client's trauma history. Without this awareness, even well-intentioned therapeutic work can trigger re-traumatisation, pushing a client beyond their capacity to integrate the experience. The result can be worse than no therapy at all.

How our therapists approach this

At THT, we take the trauma-aware dimension of somatic practice seriously. Our listed therapists are expected to demonstrate not only technical skill in their chosen modality but also a genuine understanding of trauma dynamics and nervous system regulation. Many hold specific qualifications in trauma-informed care, somatic experiencing, or related disciplines. During our review process, we look for evidence of ongoing professional development in this area, as the field continues to evolve rapidly.

When browsing our directory, you can look for the "Trauma Healing" modality tag to find practitioners who have specific expertise in working with trauma. We encourage all clients, but especially those who know they carry trauma, to read therapist profiles carefully, ask questions before booking, and trust their own sense of safety above all else. Your body's wisdom about what feels safe is the most reliable guide you have.
